A real classic needs to be 30 or more years old. You don't see collectors going after a 1993 Ford Probe.

These words you speak, they are very true.

I'm trying to convince my dad of this. I want a project vehicle, he wants something safe. I told him nothing before the mid 90's came with airbags (and is in their mind, safe) and nothing after the mid 90's is worth being a project car because it's not a classic. That, plus CA smog laws, and I say anything after 1975 isn't really a "classic" per se.

BMW E30 M3. Ferrari F40. Porsche Carrera GT. Acura NSX. BMW Z8.

Thirty isn't a hopeless guide, but it's not a commandment. Plus thirty right now (the dawn of MY 1984) puts you right after the Malaise, and that is tricky territory for collectors or enthusiasts. Twenty-five may be more reasonable, but still.

And second-gen Probes are pretty okay machines. Maybe not '64 Mustang collectible, but not bad.

Age, production numbers, popularity, and/or performance usually makes something collectible.

I'd say that it varies from car to car. Something like a nice early W124 is already a classic, while a Hyundai Sonata will only have a shot if all of humanity suddenly becomes incurably insane.

I think a lot of cars 20 - 25 years old can be considered vintage or even classic. People in their late twenties and early thirties will have fond memories of cars from that era. This desire for nostalgia is what makes a car collectible, not it's age. But having said that I don't think my 1993 Ford Probe is ever going to be collectible but I will take it to meets and the odd car show just because you don't see them anymore. What made you pick that particular car by the way?
